Jiaying Guo awarded Peter W. Smith CSL postgraduate prize for 2024

The Peter W. Smith CSL Postgraduate Award recognises the most outstanding peer-reviewed publication in the preceding 12 months by a University of Tasmania postgraduate student that made extensive use of Central Science Laboratory (CSL) facilities and expertise.

The prize honours the vision and commitment of the late Dr Peter W. Smith OAM for the formation and continued successful operation of the CSL, and was instigated in 2014 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of establishment of this university facility.

The recipient for 2024 is Ms Jiaying Guo from The Institute of Marine and Antarctic Science (IMAS), and was announced at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the CSL.

Jiaying’s paper was entitled “Influence of ocean alkalinity enhancement with olivine or steel slag on a coastal plankton community in Tasmania” and was published in the journal Biogeosciences.  This study makes an important contribution to our understanding of the effect of CO2 sequestration through the acceleration of chemical rock weathering, and the resultant response of phyto and zooplankton microcosm communities. Understanding the environmental impact of CO2 sequestration strategies such as these will help deepen our understanding of options to help mitigate global warming changes, helping to guide future decision-makers.

Jiaying’s work made extensive use of CSL facilities and expertise including ICP-MS analysis of trace metal concentrations with A/Prof Ashley Townsend as well as additional Scanning Electron Microscopy and particulate organic matter analyses with Dr Sandrin Feig and A/Prof Thomas Rodemann, respectively.

Congratulations Jiaying.
