Textiles surround us in our everyday lives. It is interwoven into our existence and how we clothe, protect and comfort ourselves. Across cultures, the use of yarn and cloth to tell stories and mark a sense of identity has existed across generations. The use of fibre and textile practices by artists has pushed boundaries and reclaimed the demarcation of domestic or women’s work.
In this presentation, Nicole O’Loughlin will discuss the history of textiles within and beyond the art world.
Nicole is an interdisciplinary artist who works across various mediums to explore societal and political issues, pop culture and women’s narratives. She works across textiles, painting, drawing and printmaking. Her work reflects the world around her, from tiny microorganisms in print and paints to feminist, political and social commentary in textiles. Using traditional media in a contemporary context, Nicole challenges the idea of craft and pushes back against the industrialisation of the handmade. Her variety of skills shapes her work, interweaving various elements to allow for a dynamic and shifting arts practice.
