Paper towns and abandoned places: contemporary jewellery and object responses to what we take, what we cast off and what might have been.

The image shows a collection of various found vintage objects hanging in mid-air against a dark background. These objects include vintage silverware, nickel silver barbed wire with a patina. A light source from above casts dramatic shadows, creating a sense of depth. The arrangement is balanced and artistic, with each object placed at different heights and distances, giving the scene a ghostly look.

Tasmanian artist/jeweller Janine Combes uses sites of historical resource exploitation as a poetic vantage point to explore the unfinished work, for settler Australians, of learning to belong. She harnesses jewellery-making techniques to explore how we may ‘unforget’ our past, harnessing embedded text, patina, and the fragment as both form and potential material.
