Literacy and Numeracy & LANTITE

From 2024, commencing students MUST attempt the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) before the end of their first year of study. LANTITE was introduced by the Australian Government in 2016 to assess students' personal literacy and numeracy skills of initial teacher education students to ensure teachers are well equipped to meet the demands of teaching and assist higher education providers, teacher employers and the general public to have increased confidence in the skills of graduating teachers.

For more information about LANTITE please visit the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Education Students page.

Students who commenced their current degree in 2024 or later:

All students commencing an initial teacher education (ITE) course in Semester 1, 2024 or later are REQUIRED to attempt LANTITE prior to the end of the first year of their ITE qualification and all students are required to successfully complete LANTITE prior to graduation. UTAS students are required to successfully complete LANTITE prior to enrolling in the final professional experience unit*.

Students who commenced their current degree in Semester 2, 2016 or later:

All students commencing an initial teacher education (ITE) course in Semester 2, 2016 or later are required to successfully complete LANTITE prior to graduation. UTAS students are required to successfully complete LANTITE prior to enrolling in the final professional experience unit*.

Preparation and Support:

Prior to your 1st Attempt:

Prior to attempting LANTITE you should complete the MyLO Literacy and Numeracy Preparation Tests and familiarise yourself with the practice tests and resources on the ACER Website as detailed in the LANTITE information email sent out regularly throughout the year.

Subsequent Attempts (if unsuccessful):

If you are unsuccessful on your early attempts at LANTITE, you should revisit the MyLO Literacy and Numeracy Preparation Tests and re-familiarise yourself with the practice tests and resources on the ACER Website. Additional information is also available on the School of Education website (see “Literacy and Numeracy Support resources”, and purchasing the Cambridge LANTITE Edge resources is recommended, as this is a resource especially designed for LANTITE preparation.

Unsuccessful after a 3rd Attempt?

If you are unsuccessful on your 3rd attempt of LANTITE (either literacy, or numeracy, or both), we advise you to contact us to discuss further support and strategies for success, before you reenrol for your next attempt.

We will organise a meeting with either the Associate Head of Initial Teacher Education (AHITE), A/Prof Greg Oates, or your Program Director (whichever is your preference). We will also provide you with contacts for additional targeted support from our specialist staff in literacy and numeracy.

You should send an email to: SAA.Education@utas.edu.au to make an appointment.

Literacy and numeracy skills are essential for everyone, but in particular, teachers. We acknowledge these skills do not come easily to everyone and encourage you to seek support if you require it in these areas.

The aim of your teacher education course is to give you the confidence and understanding to enjoy teaching literacy and numeracy and to teach it well. The Tests of Literacy and Numeracy Competence are one way that you can demonstrate your knowledge.

If you are having difficulties passing the Literacy Test, you are strongly recommended to enrol in and complete the units "Using Words Effectively", "Clauses, Phrases and Sentences", and "Punctuation" in the Pearson online resource My Writing Lab.

While it is recommended that all students take advantage of the information resources to strengthen their formal writing, it is even more important that if you achieve less than 80% in the literary tests, you enrol and complete the course in My Writing Lab.

The following resources may also be helpful:

  1. Purdue Online Writing Lab is excellent for:

What is LANTITE?

LANTITE is a computer-based test designed to measure initial teacher education students' personal literacy and numeracy skills. The test is made up of two parts (literacy and numeracy):

  • The test involves two separate tests, one for Literacy and one for Numeracy;
  • Each test has 65 questions, a mixture of multiple choice and short answer formats;
  • The tests can be attempted in separate sittings or in one sitting (when registering, please ensure you allow enough time for each test component).

When should I sit the LANTITE?

It is a national requirement that all Initial Teacher Education (ITE) students must attempt the LANTITE (literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education) in their first year of enrolment. In addition, our accreditation requires that all students must attempt the tests before undertaking their final Professional Experience placement. Students should also familiarise themselves with the Professional Experience Guidelines: https://www.utas.edu.au/education/professional-experience/procedural-guidelines, specifically those regarding compliance, and requirements for interstate or international students.

How do I register to sit the LANTITE?

The LANTITE is administered and managed by ACER. ACER offers several test windows each year and releases test dates throughout the year: https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/register/test-dates

Where can I sit the LANTITE?

Testing centres are located in all capital cities and some metropolitan and regional areas https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/register/test-centres. Students may opt to sit the test via remote proctoring and can check eligibility here: https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/register/remote-proctoring

Why do I have to sit the LANTITE?

The LANTITE was introduced by the Australian Government in 2016 and is designed to assess the literacy and numeracy skills of initial teacher education students to ensure teachers are well equipped to meet the demands of teaching and assist higher education providers, teacher employers and the general public to have increased confidence in the skills of graduating teachers.

What if I do not achieve the standard?

It is a national requirement that all Initial Teacher Education (ITE) students must pass the tests before you can graduate. You can attempt the tests as many times as necessary to pass both components. If you are unsuccessful on your first attempts, you will be contacted about additional support. For more information, please visit: https://www.utas.edu.au/education/student-resources/literacy-and-numeracy-and-lantite.

What if I have already achieved the standard?
If you have already achieved the standard while enrolled at another institution or, from April 2023 onwards, if you achieved the standard prior to enrolling in an ITE course, please forward your Statement of Literacy/Numeracy Test Result for verification to: saa.education@utas.edu.au
