Summary:

An exciting concert of jazz exploring collaborative composition and improvisation.

Winners of the 2024 Ossa Music Prize, SymmeTrio is a new group exploring jazz in a rarely used setting. The band is driven by Louis Monaghan on piano, with Jode Brewster (saxophone) and Joshua Ford-King (trumpet) providing the extra colour on top. With no rhythm section, the group focuses on harmonic and acoustic exploration, weaving the unique sounds of each instrument into a dense structure.

This group takes strong influence from the work of Australian composers Sam Anning and Andrea Keller. Louis, Jode, and Josh enjoy composing collaboratively, by providing competing ideas and letting the music do the talking. SymmeTrio hopes to provide an exciting performance that will allow the listener to immerse themselves in the sound.

Established in 2018 and named after Tasmania’s highest mountain peak, the Ossa Music Prize is generously provided by Dr Rod Roberts alumnus of the University of Tasmania and Mrs Cecile Roberts .The Prize supports a Graduate or an Undergraduate student (and/or an ensemble) in pursuing excellence in musicianship and performance, and underwrites a state-wide performance tour, with a special focus on the North and North West and East Coast regions. Prize value is $2,500, plus additional financial support for costs associated with the statewide tour.

Tickets are free, but registration essential as seating is limited.
