Simon Monks Memorial Scholarship in Medicine

This scholarship has been established by the Simon Monks Memorial Foundation to promote the education of general practice, allied health and primary care professionals in North Western and Western Tasmania.

Dr Simon Monks was a highly respected partner in East Devonport Medical Centre prior to his sudden death in March 2007. He was an active participant on the General Practice North West (GPNW) Board as well as in the teaching and mentoring of medical students from the University of Tasmania’s Rural Clinical School. He was awarded the GPNW Long Service Award in 2005 in recognition of twenty years of continuous service to the North West Tasmania community.

Simon was a quiet, thoughtful person and a very committed and caring GP, who took a proactive and dedicated approach to achieve excellence in his clinical practice, his supervision of medical students and in all aspects of his personal and family life. The Simon Monks Memorial Scholarship in Medicine has been established in recognition of the valuable contribution that Dr Simon Monks made to the profession of general practice and community health in the North West region of Tasmania.

Eligibility

Available to a Tasmanian resident (with a preference for applicants from the West and North West of Tasmania) commencing a Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine at the Cradle Coast campus (Burnie).
Selection will be based on the applicant’s expressed passion and commitment to work on the North West coast and on demonstrated financial need.

Prof. Dennis Pashen Rural Medicine Scholarship

Overview

The University of Tasmania’s Rural Clinical School has established this scholarship in memory of Prof. Dennis Pashen. Dennis was a loved mentor and supervisor of many rural medical students and junior doctors across Tasmania and Australia. Dennis was a strong and passionate advocate for rural and remote medicine, having been President of the Rural Doctors Association and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine. He was Director of the Mt Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health, demonstrating a commitment to academic medicine and supporting students and trainees to live and work in rural communities. In the latter part of his career he worked on the West Coast of Tasmania and was named Tasmanian Rural Doctor of the Year in 2022.

Eligibility

Available to students who are commencing studies in the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (H3X) in the Rural Training Stream in Burnie.

Selection will be based on both financial need and passion for rural medicine.

Available to Tasmanian residents (with a preference for applicants from MM 3-7)

Rotary Club of Somerset Scholarship in Rural Health 2023

This award is generously provided by the Rotary Club of Somerset to a fourth year student at the University of Tasmania’s Rural Clinical School who demonstrates commitment to rural health and involvement in community engagement.

Eligibility

Applicants must be in their fourth year of medicine at the Rural Clinical School in 2024 and must demonstrate their commitment to rural health and involvement in community engagement. This student must continue their final year studies at the Rural Clinical School in 2025.

It will be a requirement for the recipient to speak to the Club about their study experiences at an agreed time after receiving the scholarship.

Should students not progress to final year, applications received will be automatically withdrawn.
